| Holly goes lightly again in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' 50th anniversary edition |
Truman Capote was already a famous young writer when he published "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in 1958. It received somewhat mixed reviews, but the story of Holly Golightly - in an earlier version she was Connie Gustafson; can you imagine? - became one of his most-loved works. Holly was almost 19, and during the early years of the war lived in a brownstone in the East 70s. She'd reinvented herself from country girl Lula Mae Barnes to a city sophisticate who kept company with a number of men, even visiting gangster Sally Tomato in prison. For a price, of course, with the added duty of delivering coded messages to his lawyer. But that's the kind of girl she was, naive when she needed to be, free-spirited at all times.
